Atlético Madrid Slump to Porto … they are out of European competition entirely
Atlético finish in the bottom of the group for first time ever.
Atlético Madrid have continued their disappointing European season as they head out of all the European competition by finishing at the bottom of group B following their away defeat against Porto (2-1) in the last round of the group stage in the Champions League.
It’s a tough pill to swallow for the Spanish side as they found themselves in the bottom spot of the group stage in the Champions League for the first time in its history and are out of European competition on 1 November for the first time since 2006 (last season in which they did not participate in European competitions).
The game wasn’t even close as the hosts were unlucky to won only 2-1. Jan Oblak played a huge role to minimize the loss of the visitors in what was a very one-sided game in favor of the hosts.
The stats show that Porto has 15 attempts, including 8 attempts on target, as Oblak was forced to make 6 saves. The Slovenian couldn’t deny an unmarked Mehdi Taremi from scoring the opening goal inside five minutes. he Kept the visitors in the game with a big save but Stephen Eustáquio beat him from close range on 24 minutes, effectively sealing the game. but overall, the goalkeeper played a strong game specially in the second half, keeping the score line from getting too ugly for Atlético.
On the other hand, Porto have won their last four Champions League matches, matching their second best run ever in the competition. They managed five in a row in 2018/19, as the Portuguese Dragons secured the top spot of group B.
