Liverpool 2-0 Napoli: The Reds inflict Partenopei first defeat
Liverpool are the first club to beat Napoli this season
Two late strikes from Mohamed Salah (85′) and Darwin Núñez (90’+8) gave Liverpool morale victory in the last round of group A in the Champions League.
Napoli entered the game without a defeat in all competitions this season, but the hosts managed to inflict Partenopei first defeat, as Liverpool end their Champions League group stage on a high.
It would have taken a remarkable score line for the Reds to overhaul Napoli at the top of group A, but given their heavy defeat in Italy on match week 1 (4-0) the home side won’t be too displeased with a second-place finish
It’s a confidence boost for Liverpool boss, Jürgen Klopp. the German coach became the seventh manager to take charge of 100 or more UEFA Champions League games, while only Pep Guardiola (61) has more wins from his first 100 games in charge in the competition than Klopp (58).
Klopp is the fourth Liverpool coach to reach the mark of 400 matches in all comps (Bob Paisley 535, Tom Watson 742, Bill Shankly 783). He has already won more matches than any other LFC coach within his first 400 matches with the club (243).
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has been named the UEFA Player of the Match. The UEFA Technical Observer Panel praised the Egyptian international’s showing, saying: “He has once again made the difference. He was constantly driving forward on the break and always being a part of dangerous attacking play.”
Salah spoke to BT Sport after the match: “To win against one of the best teams in the world, it’s a good feeling. We just need to carry on. It’s a good result for us, hopefully it will give us more confidence. We just need to focus on the league. In the end we got the result, which is very important. We played well against a tough team.”
The Egyptian King it the current top goal scorer in the UEFA Champions League 2022/2023 with 7 goals.
Napoli – although the defeat – finished at 1st place in their group stage in a single Champions League season for the second time in their history.
